Finn said “ last year’s result warmed my heart,” in relation to going to number 2, in the folk section, on a New Zealand online chart, after being played by Mark Amery on his National Radio show.

Finn has developed a sound of his own, his brand of electronic folk, epics of sound. His shows usually are with him and a band and a big sound, but this show will be the man and his guitar and a new box of tricks.

The Wellington Phoenix Women’s team delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers in Sydney, propelling them into fourth place in the A-League standings.

The Phoenix showcased their best performance of the season, with goals from Alyssa Whinham, Alivia Kelly, and Emma Main securing the crucial win. Whinham opened the scoring with a spectacular long-range strike, while Kelly’s maiden A-League goal and Main’s second of the campaign sealed the team’s rise in the rankings.

Western Sydney played most of the match a player down after goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis received a red card in the 34th minute. However, the Phoenix dominated from the outset, taking an impressive 42 shots at goal compared to the hosts’ four.

Head coach Paul Temple praised his squad for their clinical performance, describing it as possibly the best since he took charge.

“It was a really good performance,” Temple said post-match. “I thought we moved the ball really well and created countless opportunities to get in and around their box and take shots. We looked dangerous.”

Despite the Wanderers’ sending off altering the dynamics, Temple believed his team was already in control before the red card.

“We were looking confident and more likely to score even before the sending off,” he noted. “We handled the pressure well, and in the end, it was a pretty clinical display.”

Temple made only one change to the starting lineup that secured a 2-0 home win over Perth Glory, bringing American defender Alivia Kelly into the fold in place of Zoe McMeeken.

The Phoenix will remain in Australia as they prepare to face Adelaide United on Sunday evening.

Maia Johnston, 19, has been found alive after enduring more than 40 hours in the Upper Hutt bush following a fall at a waterfall. The Hamilton woman, who sustained multiple injuries, is undergoing surgery and is expected to remain in hospital for several weeks.

Johnston was reported missing on Saturday evening after telling her family she was going for a walk. Concern grew when it was discovered she had left without her phone or wallet. Rescuers located her along the Cannon Point trail yesterday afternoon, to the immense relief of her family and the hundreds of volunteers who had joined the search effort.

Johnston being loaded into the Wellington Free Ambulance

Johnston’s mother, Amy Walsh, expressed gratitude to the community and rescuers, describing her daughter’s recovery as a long journey ahead. “She’s in her first of many surgeries now. She has fought like a trooper for 42 hours alone,” says Walsh. She adds that Johnston is otherwise well and has maintained her sense of humour.

The popular Cannon Point trail, where Johnston was found, is a challenging intermediate-level track leading through the Akatarawa Forest to Birchville Dam. Searchers had set up a base at Tōtara Park School, coordinating efforts and encouraging locals to review CCTV footage.

Walsh earlier urged her daughter to return home, dismissing suggestions that Johnston might have left voluntarily. “Maia, if you’re out there, come home. You’re not in trouble,” she said.

Rescuers carried Johnston out of the bush, where she was embraced by loved ones before being transported to the hospital. Reflecting on the discovery, Walsh says, “I thought she was dead,” but is now relieved that her daughter is alive and on the path to recovery.

Massey University’s decision to cut funding for Te Tira Ahu Pae, Aotearoa’s first co-governed students’ association, has provoked outrage among students, who see it as another example of the university disregarding their voices. Many are calling the move a betrayal of students’ wishes and an attack on independent representation.

Creative Arts student Marie says she is disappointed, stating that the decision “contrasts sharply with the recent large-scale hīkoi to Parliament advocating for co-governance.” Political Studies student Peter Helm, accuses the university’s leadership of “aligning with alt-right ideologies and fostering racial division,” which he believes is entirely disconnected from the sentiments of the student body.

Massey Universtity, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly.

Massey has defended its decision, claiming governance issues within Te Tira Ahu Pae. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Tere McGonagle-Daly, says, “We continue to have ongoing concerns that the representation model/structure is no longer adequately serving the student body.” However, students argue this is a pretext to dismantle their independent voice.

Green Party MP, Francisco Hernandez, supports Massey students in their fight for independent representation. “It’s really important that students have an independent and self-governing voice that stands at arm’s length from the university and provides genuinely independent advocacy services,” he says. Hernandez has been actively involved in discussions between the university and the student association and expresses hope for a resolution. “While I’m concerned Massey University has taken this drastic step, I’m confident we can work through the issues with dialogue and good-faith negotiations.”

Students are mobilizing against the funding cut, which they argue undermines independent student representation and sets a dangerous precedent for student unionism across New Zealand. Many believe the university’s leadership, particularly McGonagle-Daly, has acted in bad faith, prioritizing control over genuine student advocacy.

The controversy comes at a time of heightened national discourse on co-governance and Māori rights. On November 19, 2024, over 55,000 people participated in a historic hīkoi to Parliament, protesting the proposed Treaty Principles Bill, which many see as an attack on Māori rights and co-governance structures. The timing of Massey’s decision, juxtaposed with this widespread show of support for co-governance, has only deepened students’ mistrust of the university’s intentions.

A fatal shark attack claimed the life of commercial diver Jade Kahukore-Dixon on Tuesday in the Chatham Islands. The attack, believed to involve a great white shark, highlights the risks faced by those working in this challenging environment.

Marine scientist Dr. Riley Elliot describes fatal great white shark attacks as “super rare.” He says, “There’s been three great white fatal attacks in New Zealand over 20 years.” This incident marks the first such fatality in the country since 2021.

The Chatham Islands, known for their abundant sea life, are home to one of the largest populations of great white sharks. Dr. Elliot explains that the area’s thriving marine ecosystem attracts divers but also presents dangers. He adds, “This guy seemed to have loved the ocean. He was aware of sharks there, and he wasn’t afraid of them.”

Jade’s grandmother, Sandy, remembers him as a “happy-go-lucky boy” who was “tough as old boots.” His death has deeply affected the tight-knit island community, many of whom rely on the sea for their livelihoods.

WorkSafe has been notified of the incident and is conducting initial inquiries. The case has also been referred to the coroner.

Dr. Elliot emphasises that while commercial divers mitigate risks, they operate in unpredictable conditions. “You cannot control nature. That’s what makes it thrilling and why these guys love the sea,” he says.

This tragedy underscores the need for awareness of the hazards faced by those working in such environments. While great white sharks typically do not see humans as prey, encounters with them remain a risk for professionals like divers and surfers.
